The prosecutor sought to make clear to a jury of 12 that there was no confusion about whether Maxwell, Epstein’s long-time companion, was his puppet or accomplice. She described Maxwell, 59, as central to Epstein’s sex abuse scheme, which prosecutors say lasted over a decade.... Maxwell “helped normalise abusive sexual conduct” by making the teenagers feel safe and by taking them on shopping trips and asking them about their lives, their schools and their families. Pomerantz said the abuse occurred at Epstein’s homes, including his estate in Palm Beach, Florida; his posh Manhattan town house; a Santa Fe, New Mexico, ranch; a Paris apartment; and a luxury estate in the Virgin Islands. Authorities charged Maxwell in July 2020, arresting her after tracking her to a US$1 million New Hampshire estate where she had been holed up during the coronavirus pandemic. The wealthy, Oxford-educated Maxwell is the daughter of British newspaper magnate Robert Maxwell, who died in 1991 after falling off his yacht – named the Lady Ghislaine – near the Canary Islands. Ghislaine Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein created a "pyramid scheme of abuse" by offering cash to poor underage girls, luring them into a web of sexual abuse, prosecutors said Monday in opening statements of Maxwell's criminal trial. Prosecutor Lara Pomerantz told jurors that in the 1990s, Maxwell would procure girls for Epstein via the "ruse" of a massage. "You'll learn that the cover of massage was the primary way the defendant and Epstein lured girls into sexual abuse." The playbook eventually changed as they began to give $100 bills to poor teenage girls from broken homes, promising them money and access to resources, Pomerantz said. "By the early 2000s, the defendant and Epstein found an easier way to maintain a continuous flow of girls to abuse," Pomerantz said. "Instead, they devised a pyramid scheme of abuse, a scheme that no longer required the defendant to personally find young girls for Epstein." https://www.komu.com/ghislaine-maxwells-sex-trafficking-trial-begins-monday-prosecutors-allege-she-created-a-network-of-underage/article_5d22e2f2-5b3b-5c88-986b-4669072b2965.html
