Bron: Do you know who was in charge of the last great dividing up of Eastern Europe? and do you have some maps of the area divided by ethnicity? Surely the predominant ethnicities and language of people would indicate where the so-called "national" boundaries would be.
Reuben: The territory of so called Ukraine was acquired by the western regions after WW2. Technically the last great divide that took place was upon the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Reuben: Crimea actually had a referendum in favour of its own independence, but it was somehow swallowed up into independent Ukraine in 1991. There's been conflict between Crimea and Ukraine ever since that happened. Crimea's population is 62% Russian.
